How to change your SoundCloud username or profile URL, and give yourself a rebrand

One of the rules of good personal branding is that you need the same username on all your social media accounts.

So if you're an artist with an aging SoundCloud page — the music hosting platform has been around since 2008 — your account might be using an outdated username. If this is the case, and you plan to get back into music, you'll want to change it.

Fortunately, your SoundCloud display name can be changed, using either your computer or mobile app.

Also note that if you change your SoundCloud name on a web browser, rather than the mobile app, you can also make the change to your profile URL.

How to change your SoundCloud name and account URL on the website

1. Sign in to your account on the SoundCloud website. 

2. Tap the profile image next to your username in the top-right corner, then click "Profile."

3. Tap "Edit" next to the pencil icon, below your profile's header. 

You can also customize your SoundCloud page in other ways, including adding a header photo of your choosing. Emma Witman/Business Insider

4. Make any desired changes to your SoundCloud display name and profile URL, then click "Save changes."

Note that you can only use numbers, lowercase letters, underscores, or hyphens in your URL. Emma Witman/Business Insider

How to change your SoundCloud name in the mobile app

1. Download the SoundCloud app in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and sign in. The user interface for changing your display name will be nearly identical in the Android and Apple versions of the SoundCloud app.

2. In the SoundCloud app, tap the library icon in the bottom row of options on your screen.

3. Tap your profile image icon in the top-right corner.

Once you're on your Library page, you'll see your profile icon in the upper-right corner — tap it. Emma Witman/Business Insider

4. For iPhone users, at the top, you'll see "Your profile." Tap it, then tap "Edit profile." On Android, tap the pencil icon next to "View public profile." Some of the profile settings are only available to SoundCloud Go+ users, SoundCloud's paid subscription tier.

5. Change your display name however you like, then tap "Save" to finalize it.
